About

I am a curious and never stop learning Biomedical Scientist. My great passion is human and animal health, from the understanding of the physiopathological processes to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment. I pursued my vocation by studying Veterinary Science, followed by a PhD in Medicine, which provided me a strong background in Molecular and Cellular Biology and a high level of knowledge in the fields of endocrinology, metabolic diseases and inflammatory biomarkers, where I currently continue my scientific path as a postdoctoral research scientist. I have developed most of my research in Spain, performing international internships at Reading University (UK), Yale University (USA) and Helmholtz Zentrum München (Germany), while working in collaboration with international groups, healthcare professionals in a multicultural and multidisciplinary atmosphere. I have gained experience in the design and development of experimental studies and in a wide range of cellular and Molecular Biology techniques. I have developed excellent communication skills to effectively disseminate scientific data through scientific documents and in national and mostly international biomedical conferences. I have also given masters classes and seminars since 2011, in the Neurosciences Master's at the School of Medicine of the UAM and in Research Methodology and Physiology of the Health Sciences Faculty of the UZ. All of these years and experiences have empowered me with critical thinking skills, organization and the importance to take into account each detail to make things work. Continuous learning and curiosity is in my DNA. Understanding the physiopathological mechanisms underlying diseases and provide efficient solutions to improve people's health is my biggest motivation. I consider myself curious, responsible, flexible and with a great commitment towards my projects and the work I develop. I have growing interest in identifying therapeutic targets, bioactive compounds and drug and vaccines development for unmet medical needs by using cutting-edge research. I am pleased in meeting new people with new perspectives and knowledge as well as fresh and innovative ideas to face new health challenges. Pilar

I got my own funding to continue my scientific career as a Sara Borrell Postdoctoral Researcher at GENUD Research Group. I am involved in different clinical studies of childhood obesity assessing and identifying biomarkers of obesity and insulin resistance development during infancy and adolescence. Besides, I participate in teaching activities in the Research Methodology and Physiology subjects of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Zaragoza. • Main responsibilities and achievements: - Strong background in the obesity research field, inflammatory biomarkers associated with overweight, obesity and diabetes by participating in large clinical projects in collaboration with different research groups and physicians from healthcare institutions who designed the studies and recruited the patients. - Identification of a marker related to the inflammatory process involved in obesity during childhood. - Experimental / study design, data analysis, interpretation of results and compilation thereof into papers, reports, grants and presentations. - Managing of large patient samples and databases containing clinical variables according to guidelines. - Literature review to elaborate chapter books and reviews. Keeping updated to new discoveries. - Communication skills: presentation at international and national conferences and writing grant proposals. Recruitment of patients for the clinical research studies. Teaching collaboration at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the UZ. - International scientific collaboration to carry own my own research project as a result of the writing of a successful proposal leading to a grant mobility within my postdoctoral program. - Participation in several collaborative projects in the obesity, diabetes and nutrition field. - Technical skills: Cell culture, In Vitro studies, RNA isolation, RT-PCR, qPCR, Immunoassay, microscopy, large patient sample management.
