Peter J Gruber is a congenital heart surgeon, scientist, and inventor. He completed his undergraduate training at the University of Pennsylvania followed by an M.D., Ph.D. at Penn. He pursued clinical training at the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). He held the position of Assistant Professor at Penn and was a staff surgeon at CHOP. He joined the Primary Children’s Medical Center as the Jensen Presidential Chair, and Chief of the Section of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Gruber then moved to the University of Iowa as the Ehrenhaft Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and co-Director of the Abboud Cardiovascular Research Center. He is currently Vice Chair of Research and Professor of Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine. He is the Surgical Director of the Children's Heart Center at Yale New Haven Hospital. His clinical interests revolve around complex congenital cardiac repairs, mechanical support, and transplantation. He is best known for his clinical care of complex neonates and mechanical support with an overall survival of >98% and for the highest complexity surgical cases >91%. His scientific work in human congenital heart disease, particularly investigations in the molecular basis of defects of cardiac morphogenesis are current topics of investigation in his NIH-funded laboratory. Dr. Gruber’s honors include election to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and American Surgical Association. Dr. Gruber is co-founder of Brogent International, LLC and holds IP for epigenetic treatments for ischemic injury.
