About

After four years of macroeconomic studies at the Stockholm School of Economics, Mr. Barre was recruited into a two-year executive program at one of the world’s largest shipping conglomerates, gaining comprehensive exposure to technical ship management, commercial operations, chartering, finance, and market strategy. In the late 1970s, he relocated to New York City to lead a newly formed subsidiary. In the mid-1980s, he founded a shipping company that, during his tenure, cumulatively operated more than 100 owned and chartered vessels. The company pursued a disciplined value strategy across the tanker, dry cargo, and container sectors, including acquiring vessels from banks holding distressed loan portfolios. As market conditions strengthened and asset values peaked, Mr. Barre successfully exited his holdings. Recognizing that shipping investment decisions were often based on incomplete or imprecise information, Mr. Barre developed objective algorithms to measure and forecast vessel supply and demand. His work identified sea-mile demand as a more accurate proxy for vessel demand than traditional ton-mile measures, capturing market dynamics more precisely. In the 1990s, he was also an early adopter of quantitative high-frequency trading strategies on the New York Stock Exchange. By the early 2000s, his operation had become the largest independent trader on the NYSE, accounting for approximately 10% of daily exchange volume. With more than five decades of international business experience, Mr. Barre has developed exceptional insight into oil markets, global fleet movements, and the economic signals embedded in those flows. This expertise has been central to profitable trading strategies in crude oil, refined products, and marine fuel futures. Since 2004, he has focused on crude and product tanker markets, combining ship-owning experience, bespoke financing expertise, market-cycle analysis, and quantitative strategy to help clients make well-timed investment and chartering decisions. His proprietary value-and-cycle analyses have repeatedly identified optimal entry and exit points, enabling investors and industry participants to maximize returns. His clients have included major oil companies, commodity traders, and shipowners. Over the past 20 years, Mr. Barre has also been deeply focused on the VLCC sector. As an advisor to Castor LLC in Greenwich, Connecticut, he has been one of the most active participants in the VLCC newbuilding and sale-and-purchase markets, with numerous contracts concluded.
