Paulo Martins Fernandes is a PhD researcher in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the School of Engineering at Universidade do Minho, conducting research in the field of Lean Manufacturing, with a focus on applying this philosophy to the healthcare sector and hospital units. He was the Director of Briel (BRAMP), a large company in the household appliances sector with a large presence on a global scale. Briel is the oldest portuguese producer of coffee machines, with continuous production since 1978. BRAMP - Braga metals and polymers - is a reference company, both nationally and internationally, in the production of injected plastic components and products, dedicated to developing solutions for the automotive, electronic and industrial sectors. He was also, for several years, Director of ParanhoCarnes, Indústria e Comércio, S.A., a Portuguese company - from the food sector - with higher level certification according to International Featured Standard (IFS) Food, and with a strong presence in national and international markets. He consolidated experience in industry and production as Responsible for Quality and Production in a factory with dozens of operators, before assuming management positions. He holds a degree in Biochemistry, having been elected president of the Association of Students of Biochemistry, and a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management. He completed a specialization in Economics at the University of Oxford. He also has several scientific articles published in international journals and is a frequent speaker at international congresses. Nowadays he has frequent participation in media, collaborating and writing regularly in the newspapers Observador and Público, on topics such as economy, industry, lean manufacturing, consumption, production, sustainability, production chains, supply and demand. He is also, simultaneously, Editor of the newspaper O Basto and member of the board of the Associação de Desenvolvimento Técnico-Profissional das Terras de Basto (ADBASTO).
