About

I have designed and programmed operating systems for 50+ years, working on the Multics and Stratus VOS/OpenVOS operating systems. In that time I worked on several compilers, helped write and then maintained an APL interpreter, wrote an assembler, command processor, command macro processor, and a binder. I co-designed a transaction-based file system and co-designed and project managed the implementation of National Language Support (double-byte characters). I designed and implemented many system enhancements. I am the architect of POSIX support for Stratus VOS and personally wrote much of the runtime support. I ported many open-source and licensed packages to the Stratus OpenVOS environment, including OpenSSL, OpenSSH, MySQL, WebSphere MQ, GPG, Curl, Perl, NTP, Subversion, Git, and many, many more. I'm presently working with a team of engineers porting a new release of GCC to OpenVOS. I have been a first and second-level manager, an internal consultant, and achieved the highest technical grade at Stratus (Sr. Technical Consultant). I recently managed a team of Professional Service engineers. I continue to contribute to the software development effort. When I was working full-time, I frequently met with customers in both pre-sales and post-sales roles, including new product introduction, direct support and crisis resolution. I enjoy meeting and helping our worldwide base of customers. I volunteer as a fund-raiser for my university and I participate in various local activist organizations. Specialties: Compilers, Operating Systems, Customer/Engineering Liaison, Software Architecture, Software Development Process, Software Testing, Professional Services, Consulting Services.
