Patrick Neuberger

Microbial Ecology Research Technician at AAFC

Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada

About

For eight years I have been investigating the diversity of microorganisms in Canadian soils. I attended the University of Alberta for a B.Sc. in Molecular Genetics. My undergraduate research work focused on the characterization of fungal communities of soils in the Athabasca Oil Sands to improve current reclamation strategies. I then completed a M.Sc. in Microbiology and Biotechnology at the University of Alberta in 2018 exploring how permafrost thaw impacts the viability and community structure of permafrost microorganisms. My current work at AAFC encompasses a broad range of projects including the assessment of: how mycorrhizal networks develop and function in agricultural crops, and how microbial communities respond to long-term agricultural practices. These projects taught me a wide variety of technical skills (including fluorescent/brightfield microscopy, nutrient analysis, and microbial community characterization) pertinent to the fields of environmental microbiology and soil sciences.

Experience

  • Research Technician at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
    Feb 2019 - Present · 7 yrs 5 mos

Organization of a microbial ecology research laboratory. Manages students and implements research projects as outlined by supervisors and collaborating scientists. Performs molecular biology procedures including DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, and high-throughput sequencing, in addition to bioinformatics and microscopy.

  • University of Alberta (3 yrs 6 mos)
    • Graduate Research Assistant
      Sep 2016 - Sep 2018 · 2 yrs 1 mo

Experimental design and execution of complex environmental microbiology projects. Performed whole microbial community analysis and quantified the viability and cell abundance of microorganisms from ancient low biomass permafrost soil samples from Yukon, Canada.

    • Graduate Teaching Assistant
      Sep 2016 - Apr 2018 · 1 yr 8 mos

Instructed two laboratory sections for Microbiology 265: General Microbiology. Ensured proper safety procedures were followed amongst students within the lab including disposal of biological, sharp, and general lab waste. Demonstrated general lab techniques and lectured students about laboratory methods and assignments. Maintained laboratory equipment including incubators, microscopes, and lab computers. Formally evaluated skill and knowledge outcomes of students.

    • Undergraduate Researcher
      Apr 2015 - Sep 2016 · 1 yr 6 mos

Creation of experimental designs to understand reclamation soil community dynamics. Undertook soil activity assays and preparations for high-throughput sequencing. Performed the subsequent bioinformatic analysis (Mothur, PLUTOF). Communication of research findings through poster presentations, seminars, and scientific manuscripts.

  • Summer Researcher at University of Calgary
    Jun 2011 - Aug 2011 · 3 mos

Implemented molecular analysis of cancer cells in response to inflammation and presented my findings to a group of peers and colleagues. Performed qRT- PCR techniques and cell culture maintenance.
