Parker Sorenson is a Civil Engineer with the Town of West Hartford Engineering Division, where he leads many engineering projects as part of the town’s Vision Zero initiative. This ambitious program aims to improve safety for all users and to eliminate roadway fatalities by 2033. Parker is a key member of the town’s engineering team which has advanced over 70 Vision Zero projects totaling $1 million in 2024 alone. Parker has also been pivotal in securing two federal Safe Streets 4 All (SS4A) grants to support Vision Zero projects totaling $4.8 million. These grants support transformative projects, including automated speed and red-light enforcement and safety improvements within the Vision Zero Focus Areas and at all 16 public school campuses. Before his role with West Hartford, Parker spent nearly eight years at FHI Studio, where he collaborated with municipal, regional, and state agencies on roadway planning and engineering projects, honing his expertise in transportation safety and infrastructure development.
-Managed the development of the CT Statewide Bike Ped Plan Update network in ArcGIS and supported the creation of presentation material with this data for use in public involvement sessions. -Solely responsible for the drafting components of a CTDOT curve safety project in MicroStation. -Represented CTDOT in public involvement events representing the department in several capacities, including a multibillion-dollar project to rebuild I-84 through Hartford, CT.
Street and Highway Design
-Responsible for the laboratory instruction in CE2410, Introduction to Geospatial Analysis and Measurement (Surveying), in Fall 2015 for approximately 40 students. -Responsible for the laboratory instruction in CE4410, Computer Aided Site Design (Bentley MicroStation and InRoads), in Spring 2016 for approximately 75 students. - Awarded Teaching Assistant of the Semester for Spring 2016 within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
-Worked with engineering staff to develop rail operations models to be used in network optimization. -Responsible for the completion of comprehensive progress reports to be delivered to our rail clients which detailed the basis of LTK’s methodology and assumptions for modeling projects. -Collaborated with engineering staff to complete modeling tasks in an efficient manner by cleaning up other data sources provided by clients utilizing coding techniques in Excel and Microsoft VBA.
