I lead research in neuromorphic computing and quantum computing at LLNL. My current work includes leading efforts to develop 3D brain inspired AI accelerator for low power computing and robotics, and 3D ion-trap architectures for scalable quantum computing. To achieve these goals I manage a team of 18 staff across LLNL, Sandia National Laboratories, UC Davis, and the University of Texas at El Paso. I direct a $2.7 million DOE/NNSA-funded project as lead principal investigator to advance neuromorphic in-sensor computing for extreme environments. Across these efforts, I connect materials science, device design, microfabrication and advanced manufacturing to turn new computing and sensing concepts into physical systems. I’m particularly interested in how automated innovations in materials and fabrication can enable architectures that are practical to build, test, and scale. I have co-authored two papers in Nature, alongside publications in Physical Review Letters and Nano Letters. I am a co-inventor on patent filings spanning ion trapping, integrated photonics, and additive manufacturing. My work on 3D ion traps has been recognized with LLNL’s 2026 Director’s Science and Technology Award. I welcome conversations with semiconductor founders, investors, and industry R&D teams exploring neuromorphic hardware, quantum technologies, and advanced manufacturing—especially collaborations that connect emerging computing architectures with practical hardware development.
