From the site description: "The AMSI-MATRIX Winter School is set for an engaging two-week program designed for postgraduate students, early-career researchers, and industry professionals in the mathematical sciences. This annual event provides a deep dive into contemporary research, featuring insights from leading national and international experts. Participants will explore open problems and advanced techniques within a themed framework." In 2025, for the first time, AMSI collaborated with a group I have led to design the academic program, while MATRIX was in charge of hosting the event in Creswick, Victoria. The 2025 theme, “Mathematics for Action: Supporting Decision-Making for a Better Future,” was specifically selected to exemplify on the role of mathematics and computing to address some of the world's most important challenges in sustainable development. https://www.matrix-inst.org.au/winter-school-2025/
LAB5 SYSTEMS was at the forefront of the next generation of design thinking and is a strategic incubator with a focus on a cradle to grave systems approach to problem-solving. The 5 in LAB5 stands for C.S.T.E.M. STEM subjects traditionally are Science Technology, Engineering, and Maths but this omits a Critical components namely Creativity and Commercialization. The company has a three-tiered business model firstly to continue to build our award-winning services, second to create key partnerships in joint ventures where our vision aligns and thirdly to manage an in-house portfolio of start-up projects. Design has traditionally been used as a tactical advantage and to significant effect but rarely is design thinking use as a strategic game changer. This philosophy of developing SYSTEMS rather than just products has been key to our client's success. https://www.lab5systems.com The company closed activities with the passing of the CEO, acclaimed Concept Artist and Designer Jeff Julian https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0432202/
I volunteered since September 2002 (i.e more than 16 years) to lead a Data Science team to support a medical research NFP organisation which is a unique partnership between Hunter New England Health, the University of Newcastle and the local community. Established in 1998, it is now considered the third largest medical research institute in NSW. The quest was to establish new analytical methods for Personalised Medicine. In 2007, I took the role of Founding Co-leader of one of the seven Programs of the HMRI. Our program was the first of its type in Australia.
