CEng(SG), Chartered Engineer (Institution of Engineers Singapore, Environment & Water sector) | Project Management Professional (PMP®, PMI USA) | Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP®, PMI USA) | MSc Sustainability Management Sam might not have Captain Planet’s magic rings, but he certainly got the heart and the drive to make the world more sustainable. He did not first set out to be a sustainability hero with his underpants on the outside, he just wanted to study something interesting back in polytechnic. That "something" turned out to be Environmental Engineering, a passion that carried on through university. Before he knew it, he was knee-deep (sometimes literally) in used-water treatment and resource efficiency projects. Somewhere along the way, sustainability stopped being just a subject and became the lens through which he views the world. Now a Senior Assistant Director at NTU’s Sustainability Office, Sam works to make sustainability more than just a buzzword on campus. He believes good intentions alone don’t cut it, real impact comes from good strategic thinking, strong collaboration and a relentless drive to improve. Prior to this, at Mandai Wildlife Group’s Sustainable Solutions team, he ensured that the Mandai rejuvenation development plans were executed in an environmentally sustainable and sensitive manner, because progress and sustainability should be allies, not rivals. With wide global exposure, his career has taken him from Singapore to China, Myanmar, and the United States, working with large companies like Eli Lilly, Zoetis, and Kohler to tackle complex environmental challenges, improve resource efficiency, and turn sustainability from a compliance task into a competitive advantage. Outside of work, he swaps meeting rooms for the great outdoors. With a personal fleet (yes, a fleet) of kayaks, he is always ready for an adventure. When he is not on the water, he enjoys riding his Vespa scooter, a different kind of thrill that still feeds his love for the outdoors. Though these days, family life keeps him a little closer to shore.
