I am passionate about pushing organisations to lighten the load they put on the planet and everything that calls it home. The strategy for sustainability, and helping with the transition to a less polluting society, needs to look at every part of an organisation's value chain. That means making the planet a stakeholder, and sustainability a success criteria, in all strategy, brand, creative, advertising, marketing, communications, digital and IT projects. Most of my career has been about enabling people to do stuff easily. That is helped by uncovering the root causes of issues and the opportunities that arise from them. Which, I think, sums up the likes of service design, design thinking, business analysis, product ownership and agile methodologies. These underpin my climate career.
Since the formation of the council we have: - Launched a website full of resources for people to better understand the impact the digital industry has on the planet > thegreenpages.bima.co.uk - Written an open letter to government about the idea of a green tax to encourage organisations to rollout more planet focused employee benefits > surveyhero.com/c/xqaytzb4 - Collated the latest planet focused employee benefits > bima.co.uk/release-the-collective-power-of-your-employees-for-the-good-of-the-planet/ - Designed a set of standards for websites built to minimise their impact on the planet - Produced an emissions measurement and reduction course > futurelearn.com/courses/how-to-measure-reduce-and-offset-your-companys-carbon-footprint
I have made the planet a central part of TPXimpact’s decision making by creating and driving our planet strategy: - Measured our full scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, partnering with Emitwise to take responsibility for every emission we create, including historical emissions Implemented reduction strategies to decouple economic growth from planet degradation; reducing our tCO2e/£1m revenue by 23% - Unlocked the power of employees by implementing planet focused employee benefits, facilitating our employee led Planet Group, organising awareness raising talks/training and coordinating planet focused volunteering and philanthropy The planet strategy is the foundation of our SBTi Net Zero commitment. It has helped us win more planet focused projects and clients. And it has also yielded multiple ESG awards, commending the level of disclosure, ambition and quality of approach.
My work with our charity and public sector clients is varied, in terms of breadth and depth. I am equally happy challenging the motives and vision of a project, facilitating problem definition and ideation with the C-Suite, leading transformation programmes, carrying out user and market research, making technology recommendations, mapping detailed processes and uncovering trends in data. However, my focus on the impact the digital industry has on the planet is what I am most proud of. I led the team to create an award winning low carbon website for The Climate Group. I defined how a significant government department will measure and reduce their website emissions. I organised London Climate Action Week workshops with leaders across the industry. I’m rolling out ways of working across all of our capabilities that will see the planet become a stakeholder and make sustainability a success criteria.
I have helped the SDIA design a tool to measure the environmental footprint of a website. I was particularly focused on what is useful for digital product teams and how the results from the tool should be presented to people using websites > knowledge.sdialliance.org/digital-environmental-footprint
Put in place process, people, culture and technology changes right through the agency to ensure ambitious strategic objectives could be achieved. I restructured and refocussed the Delivery team bringing in analysis, digital and testing expertise as well as rebuilding the Development team. This enabled us to deliver multiple websites, apps and tools.
