In collaboration with the MIT CISR research community, I am responsible for both fostering relations with organizations from Europe and Latin America and conducting field-based research on how firms maximize business value and minimize risks from digitization.
In December 2008, Dr. Fonstad joined eLab. a global research center within INSEAD focused on how public and private institutions throughout the world create value from the knowledge economy. He conducts research on innovation and on how organizations and countries develop and foster skills critical for competing in a global knowledge economy (i.e., "e-competencies").
At MIT, Dr. Fonstad investigated how organizations re-structure themselves to both achieve greater synergies across business units and enhance local responsiveness. He developed the “IT engagement model” to describe how organizations effectively link IT projects to enterprise-wide governance. He has extended this research to examine how organizations effectively govern outsourcing relationships. Dr. Fonstad has taught IT and non-IT business executives in a variety of settings, including MIT CISR's "IT for the non-IT Executive" program. He also co-taught in English and Spanish a series of conferences for CxOs, sponsored by IBM, throughout Latin America (e.g., Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico).
