My responsibilities include: • Manage laboratory – keep tidy, organised and efficient; ordering; give advice to on going team projects • Manage projects (aside from the students and postdoctoral fellows) • Manage cell culture room for the team and Electron Microscopy Core Facility (EMCF) • Manage the SEMs of the EMCF – training, service maintenance, trouble shooting, reporting software bugs, alignments, and efficient use for projects. • Bring expertise to the lab, responsible for training and providing technical assistance to visitors, students and postdoctoral fellows of the team • Organise courses • Electron microscopy (EM) sample preparation techniques from fixation to embedding in resins • Sections by ultramicrotomy • EM acquisitions on all available systems of the EMCF • Cell culture • Data analysis – alignments, segmentation and visualisation with various softwares • Implemented the Pelco Biowave Pro microwave into the lab and EMCF. Established and optimised standardised protocols for broad user base, which is continually updated.
Research Assistant to Prof. Rob Parton My responsibilities included: • Plastic (epoxy) sample preparation and sectioning – cell monolayer and tissue • Cell culture – multiple cell lines • Strong input into designing and optimizing research experiments • Many collaboration projects combining electron microscopy techniques • Growing cells on sapphire disc to High Pressure Freeze then undergo freeze substitution and polymerization in lowicryl HM20 • Frozen sectioning using Tokuyasu method • Immuno-labelling
