I joined AMCI Africa / Borneo Mining SA in March 2008 as Chief Financial Officer, which included taking responsibility for all legal related matters. AMCI Africa / Borneo Mining is a wholly owned subsidiary of AMCI Capital, a US based private equity firm, with an investment focus on the mining industry. The key responsibility is the monitoring of the Southern African assets under management, and originating (lesser emphasis) and execution of investment transactions across Southern Africa. With regard to the monitoring of assets under management, I represents AMCI Capital’s interest on different levels from board representation, member of the executive committee to attending other relevant committees such as audit, finance and operational committees. I take full responsibility for the initial financial analysis of projects or companies. Together with the broader AMCI Capital team, this resulted in the development of detailed valuation models, including DCF, comparable company and IRR analysis and preparing presentations to the AMCI Capital investment committee. The review of legal documents, together with internal and external lawyers, forms a major part of my role at AMCI Africa.
From Iscor, I joined the Risk and Structuring team at Andisa Capital (then SRTMS / Standard Risk and Treasury Management Services) in May 2001. At that stage, SRTMS was a wholly owned subsidiary of Standard Bank South Africa. As a member of the Risk and Structuring team, I was responsible for servicing Andisa's Base metal and Energy clients, where I managed and advised clients on their financial market risks and treasury needs, the financial market risks being commodity, foreign exchange, interest rate and funding exposures, while the other treasury needs included general advice on cash management, development of treasury and risk management policy, and advice on treasury best practice. During 2003, I was promoted to Head: Risk and Structuring. Together with my team we were responsible for developing and maintaining Andisa Treasury Solutions’ strength in terms of derivatives modelling, pricing and risk reporting capabilities. This incorporated vanilla to very exotic derivative structures. The markets ranged from commodities (precious and base metals and fuel) to foreign exchange and interest rate markets. In 2006, I was promoted to Deputy Managing Director, but with continued responsibility for the Risk and Structuring unit. I was also responsible for identifying new business opportunities ranging from new clients to possible business partners and acquisitions.
My career started at Iscor at the Thabazimbi Iron Ore Mine where I worked as a geologist for 3 years in both an exploration and a mining environment.
