ProRail aims to improve the sustainability of its operations to move towards the goal of turning its environmental impact to zero. The safety department manages 250,000 B-relay units that, through interlocking technology, secure most of the railways in the Nether- lands. To further their progress towards their sustainability goals, ProRail is interested in determining and potentially increasing the expected lifespans of their B- relay technology without compromising on their strict safety requirements. Additionally, by increasing the lifespan of their B-relay, ProRail will also save on material and labor costs. Therefore, a Survival Analysis (SA) model has been designed, which determines and predicts an asset’s expected survivability and hazard risk over time. It is a statistical model that requires data on the starting events (installation) and the End-of-life (EOL) events, which when a unit is no longer fit for use. The model is validated through its application to a case study on five data sets containing the measurement data obtained by ProRail’s inspectors every six years during an inspection. The two main contributions of this project are the providing the design of an operational survival analysis model and the results obtained from its application to the B-relay case study. Moreover, with the insights obtained by the case study, ProRail can update its maintenance policy.
