Secondment to the UQ ITS infrastructure operations centre as senior network engineer providing technical support to the university community.
Recently: Advise, design, configure, support and maintain of the institute data network, including, but not limited to, layer 3 switch, VPN apliances(VPN 3000, ASA), firewall (PIX,FWSM, ASA) and access switches. Configuration, support and maintenance of networked based services: DHCP,DNS and e-mail. Active participiation on the design and implementation of solutions for storage,virtualization and high performance computing. Initially in this position: coordinate the computing support group, escalate support tasks to computing support group members,development of IT operational policies, recommendation of purchases and specifications,maintenance of the Unix servers and workstations, liaise with vendors and suppliers regarding product specifications and level 2 or 3 support, coordinate and implement a project to replace a Macintosh file server with a Unix based file server attending MacOS and MS-Windows clients; Recommend and implement data security and integrity measures, maintain and provide recommendations on improvements in the IMB data network, provide level 2 support to Unix related cases.
Coordination of the systems programmers group in the absence of the systems programmer manager Setup, installation, configuration and administration of the departmental network ATM backbone and edge devices across buildings with more than 700 nodes from standalone Ethernet switches to the ATM virtual network router. The main tasks I was in charge of were: capacity and topology planning, installation and configuration, maintenance and support, vendor support contact, contingency planning. Installation and administration of Sun SPARC servers with Solaris OS running DNS, NFS and NIS. Installation and adminstration of FreeBSD servers. Site security, from installing firewalls and security tools to checking for new vulnerabilities on the packages/systems installed in the departmental network, as well as systems and network security auditing. Developing and porting of software tools in C language and Bourne/Korn shells to assist the day-by-day administration of the installed servers. Installation and administration of the departmental anonymous FTP and WWW servers. Oracle database administration: installation and configuration, backup and recovery, maintenance of accounts, integration with networked client software.
