Research into the influence and possibilities of Artificial Intelligence for the journalistic research and selection process. In collaboration with the Dutch national broadcasting organization NOS, RTL Nieuws, the Dutch Institute for Sound and Vision, and the ombudsperson of the Dutch public broadcasting organization NPO. Earlier research delved into the opportunities and pitfalls of new storytelling techniques, such as Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality. In collaboration with the Dutch national broadcasting organizations NOS, KRO-NCRV, NTR and VPRO, and the Institute for Sound & Vision.
For the Journalism School in Utrecht (School voor Journalistiek, SVJ) I develop and implement AI-related courses for the Bachelor track as well as interdisciplinary honours programmes, such as Immersive Journalism (for students Cross Media Design and Journalism) and Artificial Intelligence in Journalism (for AI- and Journalism students). In 2024 I received a grant (Comenius Senior Fellowship) to develop a sustainable educational track on AI for journalism students. I also teach courses, such as: - Media landscape & Practice-Oriented Research. In this course I teach first-year students to research the turbulent media landscape and the role of the journalist in society, so that they are able to reflect critically and in a substantiated way on their field of expertise. - Research Into The News: Second year students learn to conduct content analysis to analyze the reporting of news media and its effects. - Writing skills. Second-year students learn to conduct journalistic research and to develop this into a successful and reliable background story, interview or report. - Graduation coaching. In individual coaching sessions I guide graduates during the design and implementation of their graduation research.
