    Sep 2023 - Mar 2024 · 7 mos

My internship was with the National Neuroscience Institute of Singapore and under the Department of Neuroscience & Behavioural Disorders at Duke-NUS. I am privileged to have been mentored by Prof Tan Eng King, Prof Zhou Zhidong and Senior Research Associate Ms. Saw Wuan Ting. Some of the aspects during my internship; • Recognized in depth of the different aspects to Biomolecular Engineering vs Biomedical Engineering. • Implementing good laboratory practices. [Lab safety, Biosafety, Chemical safety training] • Conducted in vitro: Safe handling using human tissue and fluids and Safe needle usage in research laboratory. • Opportunity to conduct an experiment known as ‘cell viability.’ • Showcased the passaging and collection of cells to be utilized for experiments. • Subculturing/passaging cells, storing and examining said cells. • Determined the appropriate toxin concentration to be utilized in further experiments which would consist of applying said toxin(s) with a drug meant to counteract the toxin’s effects. • Conducted data analysis and recommended ranking of drugs tested. • Supervised incoming research students from NTU. • Wrote a research abstract and participated in the NNI ACP Research Day 2024 I have learnt that cell culture is one of the vital mechanisms used in cellular and molecular biology, teaching us the importance of the biological processes that keep us healthy. In addition, it brings about new ways to treat diseases. And therefore, I am very passionate to applying my learnings and experience in the fields of medicine and biology as well as developing the appropriate skills required for this highly competitive field.
