My role involves design, construction and maintenance of traffic signal installations across Northamptonshire. It is my responsibility to complete all aspects of the design for new traffic signal installations, from simple Puffin crossings to more complex junctions. This includes preliminary studies and site visits, design using AutoCAD (including KeySignals and KeyLines packages), modeling using LinSig V3, completion of TR2500 forms, writing Bill of Quantities and factory acceptance tests. I also get involved in MOVA and SCOOT, both writing data sets and on site validation. It is also my responsibility to supervise these schemes when they get to the construction phase. This will often include spending time on site with the construction teams, making sure that my design is implemented correctly on site. It also includes the site acceptance testing of the traffic signal equipment once the construction is complete. I am also responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of various other installations that fall under the traffic signals category, such as Vehicle Activated Signs, Variable Message Signs and Real Time Passenger Information Signs. As part of my role it is important that I have a good understanding of the maintenance of traffic signals, which is why it helps that I spent the first year of my employment working in the netcom centre. The netcom centre deals with all aspects of maintenance of traffic signals in Northamptonshire, and is where all of the traffic signal operating systems are based. In my time working in maintenance I gained a good understanding of these systems, such as UTC, fault reporting systems, fault analysis and management.
