Since its inception in 2016, Wapatah Centre for Indigenous Visual Knowledge has contributed innovative research and Indigenous-led expertise to projects such as: the award-winning documentary Cree Code Talkers (2016) and CBC’s Canada: The Story of Us (2017); and major exhibitions at the Ryerson Image Centre (2017), Mackenzie Art Gallery (2018), Venice Architecture Biennale (2018), McMaster Museum of Art (2019), and Remai Modern (Forthcoming 2021). Wapatah also hosted The Entangled Gaze: Indigenous and European Views of Each Other in partnership with Art Gallery of Ontario and Arctic/Amazon Symposium in collaboration with The Power Plant. As part of the Centre’s commitment to Indigenous research and outreach, Wapatah collaborated with the Art Canada Institute on Iljuwas Bill Reid: Life and Work—a major publication honouring and celebrating the work of the iconic Haida artist and the 100th anniversary of his birth. Beyond Wapatah’s wide ranging research activities and contributions, the centre is also a hub for digital strategy development and collaboration. In partnership with the Onsite Gallery, Wapatah is developing the Virtual Platform for Indigenous Art (VPIA)—a custom digital space designed to facilitate Indigenous access and contributions to Indigenous artworks in museum and gallery collections around the world, including The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University, The British Museum, and Pitt Rivers Museum at University of Oxford. Wapatah has also launched the Indigenizing the Museum virtual series in collaboration with Onsite Gallery. With the aim of addressing questions around Indigenous curation and global Indigeneity, these events reapproach the relationship of the community and the museum through Indigenous art and visual ways of knowing. The series has featured Kade L. Twist and Cristóbal Martínez of Postcommodity, Cree Nation Poundmaker Floyd Favel, and Jennifer Wemigwans, writer of the Digital Bundle.
Activate T.O. is a non-profit organization focusing on free speaker series that showcase cultural activists and community outreach practitioners in Toronto. By engaging local and international speakers, artists, and activists, we foster a critical dialogue between individuals from all social, political, and cultural backgrounds in a safe and accessible space. As part of the Activate T.O. team I develop series of talks and workshops that combine innovative research, artistic practices, and community activism initiatives. I help forge new connections with community organizations, artists, and activists, and explore funding grants and sponsorship for events that contribute to Toronto communities.
