Since January 2026, I have served as Co-Founder of ICU.ngo, developing online tools to support families and patients in ICU care. Combining startup leadership with venture capital expertise, our team creates interactive guides delivering crucial resources to ICU families worldwide. With over 40 years of experience in founding impactful ventures, my mission is to empower organizations and communities through strategic innovation. I focus on developing solutions to address healthcare challenges and provide accessible support for those in need.
The ICU Guide System features two online interactive guides designed to help families of ICU patients navigate the ICU experience. These guides fill many of the gaps that research has shown previous ICU patients want tools to shed light on their ICU stays. Using a standardized form with questions derived from research on what former ICU patients want to know about their ICU stays and what post-ICU medical professionals should review as a supplement to medical records, the guides aim to provide a clearer picture of both patients' experiences and family members' needs. Recent research indicates that 50% or more of ICU patients' family members will experience PICS-F symptoms after the ICU stay: MyICU Guide and FamilyICU Guide A paper version of the guides will also be available, pending the outcome of grant applications. Our goal is to make these guides accessible to ICUs worldwide. We will analyze anonymized data from the guides to generate previously unavailable statistics, which we hope will help improve ICU patient outcomes and family support. Family members, whether new to or experienced with ICU settings, can easily become overwhelmed by what they see, hear, and smell. The technical language used by critical care staff, who often have limited time for explanations, along with unfamiliar medical terms and acronyms, can be difficult to understand, especially in stressful situations involving new and challenging conditions. The guides are designed to support families during and after an ICU stay. Each serves a distinct purpose, providing answers through daily questionnaires. These questions link to resources that explain their importance and how the answers relate to ICU care. This approach helps individuals anticipate what to expect, thereby educating and supporting everyone involved in the ICU journey.
