About

MU Jun is a Professor and Executive Dean at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture. He also serves as a member of the SDGs Commission of the UIA, Branch Director of the UNESCO Chair on Earthen Architecture, a member of the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China, and a standing committee member of five subcommittees under the Architectural Society of China. He has long been committed to research, practice, teaching, and charitable work in appropriate green architecture, with a focus on earthen construction. Supported by CRAterre-ENSAG, he developed a modern system of earthen design and construction technologies tailored to China’s urban and rural conditions, effectively addressing the limitations of traditional earth structures. He has led over 200 demonstration projects in 17 provinces—including green earthen dwellings and public buildings such as the Macha Village Community Center, Chengchong Village Tanqiang Art Research Center, and Wanjian Village Children’s Library—while training over 1,200 rural craftsmen. His work also supported key contemporary projects like the Erlitou Xia Capital Site National Archaeological Museum, Beijing Expo 2019 Pavilion, and August Dandy Whisky Distillery. His contributions have earned over 20 major awards, including the World Habitat Award Bronze Award, three UNESCO Asia-Pacific Innovation Awards, the UIA 2030 Award, two Highly Commended Awards at the World Architecture Festival, the RIBA International Award, two Terra Awards, and the First Prize for Rural Architecture by China’s Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. As a founding member and China Chief Representative of the Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge to China) Charitable Foundation, he has mobilized volunteers from over 30 universities in Hong Kong, mainland China, and abroad to implement 50+ rural development projects, benefiting 80,000 villagers, training 4,000+ grassroots technicians, and involving over 1,000 students.
