    - As part of the RD arm of the Open Targets Consortium, I lead communication efforts with major industry partners across the globe (e.g., Genentech, GSK, Sanofi, and MSD) to understand their needs and develop tailored informatic platforms for target discovery and drug discovery. - As an example, I built a database that integrates heterogeneous biomedical data annotated with timestamps extracted from their primary sources (e.g. genetic studies, clinical trials, patents and scientific literature) and used it to implement a platform prototype for the analysis of temporal trends in the discovery novel therapeutic targets (Python/SQL/R/Apache Spark/Bash): https://www.researchsquare.com/article/rs-5669559/v1. - As part of a cross-functional team that includes software developers, I ensure that the code I write follows established software standards (version control, testing, documentation, Git), uses object-oriented programming (OOP), adheres to FAIR principles (is findable, accessible, inter-operable and reusable), and is ready to run locally, in cloud-based systems (GCP) and in high performance computing systems (HPC/SLURM): https://github.com/opentargets/timeseries.

  • Visiting Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford University
    Jan 2025 - Apr 2025 · 4 mos

    - During my secondment in the AI for biology team at Stanford University, I leveraged natural language processing techniques and AI/ML frameworks (NLP/PyTorch) to harness real-world data/real-world evidence (RWE) from electronic health records (EHR) across the UK Biobank and the US All of Us Programme: https://github.com/mjfalaguera/EHR/. - As a representative of the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) at Stanford, I was invited to speak at conferences, academia/industry partnership events, and industry visits (e.g. Genentech). I delivered training sessions to strengthen adoption of EMBL-EBI’s bioinformatics and data science services. - Also, I provided structured mentorship to early-career researchers, offering expertise in research project design, methodology development, and scholarly writing, and served as co author on resulting manuscripts.

  • Associate Professor of Introduction to Bioinformatics at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya
    Mar 2022 - Sep 2022 · 7 mos

  • Research Scientist at Chemotargets SL
    Jul 2020 - Apr 2022 · 1 yr 10 mos

    - During the last year of my PhD, I worked part-time at Chemotargets biotech managing a small team of software developers in the conception of CIPsee (http://cipsee.com), a centralized drug discovery platform that integrates cheminformatics workflows (Python/RDKit/OOP) with patent data analysis and visualisation: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/minf.202300221. - Also, I developed drug discovery Python packages (SQL/RDKit/Linux) to identify candidate bioactive compounds for understudied proteins in the context of the NIH Illuminating the Druggable Genome initiative: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jcim.2c01364.
