Marc has over 20 years of experience in developing ecosystem services and natural capital approaches with public, NGO and private sector stakeholders to understand interactions between the environment and society, anticipate future changes, and support the development of appropriate strategies and policies to cope with these challenges. He has co-authored over 100 academic papers, supervised >20 PhD candidates and >100 MSc students, mostly focused on aspects of sustainable land use, ecosystem services and natural capital in the context of the global change challenges. Marc is director of the University of Edinburgh Centre for Sustainable Forests and Landscapes, chairs the UK National Committee for UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme, is president of Landscape Ecology UK and sits on the steering group of the Scottish Forum on Natural Capital.

The UK MAB National Committee (UK MAB) is the National Committee that oversees and manages the application of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme in the UK, its Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies.
ialeUK is the UK regional chapter of the International Association for Landscape Ecology. It is the main forum for landscape ecology in the UK and part of a global community. As president, I chair the ialeUK committee and represent ialeUK nationally and internationally.
