About

I am a Mechanical Design Leader with deep expertise in medical devices, microfluidics, and precision systems. Throughout my career at Ascential (D&K Engineering), Hewlett-Packard, and IBM, I have led product architecture from initial concept through high-volume production for regulated products. My design focus includes: • Product Architecture & Design: Leading the mechanical architecture of high-precision XYZ gantry systems, 6-color fluorescence microscopes, and ISO 13485 Class II automated processing stations. • Mechanism Design: Expert in motion systems and vial handling, with specific experience in slides, 4-bar linkages, belts, pulleys, and the selection of gears and bearings. • Engineering Analysis: Utilizing FEA, DOE, and GD&T to ensure reliability and performance, including vibration, acoustic, and dynamic testing. • Comprehensive Part Design: Extensive experience in the design of machined parts, sheet metal, injection-molded components, blow molding, weldments, and elastomers. • Technical Innovation: Holder of 42 utility and design patents covering inkjet technology, aerosol generation, and optical analysis of biological samples. • Manufacturing Integration: Supporting the transition to production through process development—including staking, ultrasonic welding, adhesive dispense, and fixture design—along with tool development and precision metrology. I am dedicated to delivering robust, innovative designs that balance complex R&D requirements with scalable, manufacturable solutions.

Experience

  • Senior Engineer at Ascential Medical & Life Sciences (now includes D&K Engineering)
    Jun 2009 - Feb 2026 · 16 yrs 9 mos

Designed consumables and liquid cooling systems for the Pyxa Platform (Stellaromics). • Led mechanical architecture and design of high-precision XYZ gantry systems, from motion requirements through manufacturable solution (Vital Bio). • Owned system architecture and microfluidic delivery design for an inkjet-based vaping device for a major semiconductor company and tobacco partner. • Architected and built breadboard hardware for a 6-color fluorescence microscope (Stilla), including optical path design (LEDs, filters, lenses, camera), stage selection, and early industrial design integration. • Defined mechanical system architecture for a microfluidic flowcell platform enabling X/Y sperm identification and cell manipulation (Engender Technologies). • Design lead for an ISO 13485 Class II automated processing station (Hologic Tomcat), including motion systems, vial handling, capping/decapping, vortexing, and barcode integration. • Directed servo, gear, and bearing selection; plastic and sheet-metal design; FEA; and accelerated life testing using DOE-driven optimization. • Supported manufacturing and manufacturing transfer as Product Engineer, guiding V&V, ECO-driven design improvements, supplier quality resolution, and production launch.

  • R&D Engineer / Engineering Program Manager at Hewlett-Packard
    Mar 1994 - May 2009 · 15 yrs 3 mos

Led mechanical design of industrial OEM print engines, including machined housings, motors, belts, pulleys, bearings, lead screws, cabling, and sheet-metal enclosures. • Program leader for OEM printer development with strategic partners; drove schedules, technical communication, issue resolution, and cross-organization design alignment. • Directed industrial design and mold development for the DesignJet 5000 series, managing appearance, cost, schedule, and execution; supervised mechanical engineers and drafters in Barcelona, Spain. • Designed and optimized high-volume plastic components for the HP 80 printhead, including 16-cavity mold design, material selection, and process development (ultrasonic welding, staking, leak testing, adhesive dispense). • Supported manufacturing transfer and high-volume production ramp.
