About

I am a surgeon in the Trauma Surgery department of the University Hospitals Leuven. I obtained my bachelor and master degree of medicine at the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) where I graduated in 2014 (MD). During my surgical training program I was trained in the University Hospitals Leuven, Imeldaziekenhuis Bonheiden and the Universitätsklinikum Mainz in Germany. During my surgical training i completed a Ph.D. program in medicine (Promotor Prof. Dr. Stefaan Nijs). My initial research focused on clavicle anatomy and 3D modeling and imaging of anatomical variation. This Ph.D. program was conducted in close collaboration with the department of mechanical engineering of Prof. Dr. Ir. Joost Duflou and the department of biomechanical engineering of Prof. Dr. Ir. Jos Vander Sloten. During these lab years I gained extensive experience on the use of 3D-modeling of human anatomy. This led to the publication of several peer reviewed international publications and a thorough understanding of the principles of biomechanical modeling and analysis. This research led to a successful completion and public defense of my PhD in October 2020. I underwent the last two years of my surgical training in the Zentrum für Orthopädie und Unfallchirurgie which was led by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Pol Rommens. During this period I gained extensive expertise in the treatment of pelvic and acetabular fractures. The close collaboration with Prof. Rommens and his team also led to multiple peer-reviewed international publications and the start of several research projects in the domain of pelvic and acetabular surgery. Several of these projects are conducted in collaboration with the department of mechanical and biomechanical engineering of the KU Leuven and radiology department of UZ Leuven and with a focus on patient-specific modeling. This takes place within the Trauma Research And Innovation Leuven (Trail) group of which Prof. Dr. Willem-Jan Metsemakers is the chair.
