During my bachelor thesis study, I verified a newly bought in-situ tensile-testing machine that allows fracture analysis in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) while applying a load. Therefore, I decided to use specimens of titanium grade 4 with different structures, produced by selective laser melting (SLM). During the experimental testing, images were simultaneously taken to evaluate the failure mechanism using a digital image correlation (DIC) software. Thanks to this additional computational model, zonal deformation can be quantified and critical regions visualized, even before a fracture emerges.
