He has held a diverse set of leadership positions in the energy (renewable and traditional), sustainability, infrastructure, philanthropic, and start-up spaces, where he has utilized robust stakeholder management skills to drive meaningful action that has resulted in long-lasting and measurable impact. Outside of work, Michael, a husband and father, has dedicated himself to: 1) his family; 2) establishing both the John E. Martin Memorial Fellowship and the John E. Martin Mental Healthcare Challenge; 3) participating in and leading Habitat for Humanity International - Global Village trips; and 4) competing in ultramarathons and endurance races throughout the world.
Designing and implementing strategy to achieve Scope 1 & Scope 2 net zero by 2030 via best practice climate conscious cooling and energy-water nexus optimization that promotes 24/7 hourly matching in 6 APAC countries Spearheading direct utility engagement and negotiation of energy contracts, incorporating hedging strategies Building GW scale energy procurement, policy, and analytics teams to drive decarbonization and environmental stewardship Integrating bottom-up energy demand forecasting models into corporate financial planning, aligned with workload mix and long-term growth Monitoring and responding to market, regulatory, and incentive changes, informing site selection and contracting
Negotiate and manage utility (power, sewer, & water) and construction contracts; environmental, social, & governance (ESG) initiatives; and regulatory & economic development agreements based on robust decision, economic, and financial modeling, stakeholder engagement management planning, and reliability, availability, and maintainabiltiy analysis. Develop country specific sustainability roadmaps establishing milestones for embedded carbon, energy decarbonization, water efficiency & replenishment, and wetlands restoration. Co-founded Asia Clean Energy Coalition Led 11 country policy, regulatory, & technical consulting team to advance 24X7 CFE initiative Led policy position & government engagement strategy development in operating hyperscale markets
Develop analytics to de-risk the evaluation and development of data centers, identifying constraints, risk factors, and trade-offs. Organize and evaluate data in order to generate (risk-adjusted probabilistic) analytical insights at scale and global reporting to guide site delivery and portfolio health assessments. Facilitate the development of a sustainable platform in which teams across diverse domains and geographies can maintain complete and quality datasets that can be incorporated into a robust model that drives decisions about what is built, where it is built, and how it is delivered to ensure the capacity pipeline is filled with resilient, value creating opportunities.
Acquire industrial-scale greenfield and brownfield sites, and cost-effectively (re)develop them to support hyperscale data center growth in support of a carbon-free energy 24/7 by 2030 goal. Negotiate and manage utility (power, sewer, & water) and construction contracts; environmental, social, & governance (ESG) initiatives; and regulatory & economic development agreements based on robust decision, economic, and financial modeling, stakeholder engagement management planning, and reliability, availability, and maintainabiltiy analysis. Identify, develop, and execute expansion, asset retirement, and retrofit opportunities at hyperscale data center campuses to optimize constrained resources, to augment value creation, and to reduce portfolio risk.
Managed a team of cross-functional stakeholders to perform an analysis of the Asia Pacific portfolio that led to the identification of $10B+ of high-grading opportunities to be executed via divestitures and exits. Facilitated cross-functional, global discussions to develop an Indonesia Rokan PSC extension engagement strategy with governmental bodies and Pertamina. Led the development of multiple divestiture management presentations, data room builds both physical and virtual, and coordination of engagements with perspective buyers and associated third parties, which included national oil companies (NOCs), investment banks, consultancies, and independent oil & gas firms.
Led the multi-stakeholder, cross-functional Shelf Portfolio Optimization strategic effort to classify 50 assets with combined value of $1B+ in order to determine which assets were Tier 1, which were Tier 2, and which were Tier 3. Led divestitures of ~$25MM worth of non-core Gulf of Mexico Shelf assets. Led core-up opportunities / acquisitions of Gulf of Mexico Shelf core assets worth ~$25MM.
Built a foreign owned JV business structure for Tiwi & Mak-Ban Geothermal Filipinization Project that enabled monetization of ~$500MM, while preserving operational governance. Supervised multinational team of four (4) during the Philippines focused geothermal strategy project that included a) decision analysis (DA) modeling, b) peer assists, c) engagement with investment banks, and d) the establishing of a data room. Led the building of decision support package (DSP) and uncertainty (UMP) & risk (RMP) management plan materials for the Philippines focused geothermal strategy project. Analyzed impact of delays in execution of contractual requirements to Indonesian Deepwater Development economics, and created and proposed means to mitigate such impacts. Facilitated study of LNG in the Philippines, and created a set of signposts to be closely monitored to aid in the determination of when to enter into the marketplace. Facilitated decision analysis efforts on all geothermal and associated power sales efforts for future growth projects in the Philippines, and assisted in negotiations to augment Tiwi & MakBan steam dispatch with Pambansang Korporasyon sa Elektrisidad (NAPOCOR).
Developed a long-term strategy and roadmap in partnership with a team of Ph.D candidates to encourage auto manufacturers to build SUV-EVs in mass.
Analyzed international markets resulting in the identification of a $60MM/year opportunity in new home PV installations. Modeled PV financials and quantified fiscal impact, which led to the development of a new market expansion strategy for Europe and Australia in line with the firm’s strategic aim to reduce risk through market diversification.
