Led team of ~15 engineers developing disk drive and SSD based storage products. Managed system engineering, electrical engineering (PCBA development) and hardware verification. Selected accomplishments: • Oversaw hardware design and release of several new products, including the Ultrastar Data60, Ultrastar Data102 and Ultrastar SERV60. • Revamped design team. Pushed out disruptive and low performing team members. Resolved bad behavior. Defined responsibilities and established clear objectives for each team member. • Retooled layout activities. Outsourced the bulk of PCB layout work and introduced processes to smoothly move designs into and through layout. This resulted in reduced layout times, predictable schedules, quality improvements and cost savings. • Split off verification resources into separate team. Recruited PCBA and system HW verification leads. Established processes for developing verification plans including assuring proper coverage, reuse of test cases and tracking verification status. • Put in place practices to improve manufacturability of PCBA’s including enforcing process for creating and reviewing footprints and establishing layout guidelines and constraints based on PCB fab vendor and CM DFM guidelines. This reduced DFM issues on initial prototypes by an order of magnitude and effectively eliminated manufacturability as an issue on new programs. • Worked with quality organization and suppliers to specify realistic reliability testing requirements for PCBs and PCBAs. Validated that existing design rules would properly support these requirements.
Following Grass Valley’s acquisition by Francisco Partners, I was a member of the engineering leadership team for this global supplier of production equipment to broadcasters, large networks, and service providers (the annual sales for typical product development projects range from $100K for distribution products to $15M-$20M for productions switchers). I managed an engineering team composed of engineers, designers, and technical writers. Select contributions: • Led effort to overhaul mechanical engineering team and mechanical development process, demonstrating new process with pilot project. Cut months off development time. • Optimized PCB design by reducing staff and contracting out work during peak demand periods. • Implemented transition of Switcher development team to agile development process (Scrum).
I led a team of project managers and hardware engineers developing baseband infrastructure/live production products while leading initiatives to streamline engineering. Key contributions included: • I negotiated the phase-out of the contract engineering team in India. • I successfully executed the spinoff of the company’s German design center, hiring replacement talent while ensuring an effective transfer of institutional knowledge. • Instrumental in launching next generation broadcast infrastructure program, I persuaded key members of the engineering team to embrace new technologies. • I put in place an effective process for tracking project milestones, measuring performance against plan while capturing managerial results.
I was promoted to head up Grass Valley’s newly combined SRS engineering organization (pulling together resources from Salt Lake City, France, India, and Germany with Nevada City staff) and building one synthesized team. Beyond managing budgeting, staffing, and key engineering/technology objectives, a few of the many contributions/achievements included: * Defining the organization’s direction and structure as well as implementing standardized project management and development best practices. * Spearheading analysis of product line and technology used. I created a strategic plan (including technology roadmap and a 3-year staffing plan). * Realizing cost savings and decreased time-to-market through adoption of standard tools and re-use of technology across sites.
