***Product development: formulating polymer/thermoset composition, introducing new chemical structures/components etc. ***Process development: proposing alternative synthesis, optimizing reaction conditions to boost cost-effectiveness and safety, communicating with plant engineers etc. ***Participated in sourcing of raw materials and shipment of products to customers ***Coached laboratory technicians and colleagues in synthesis and analysis ***Introduced to the team a new synthetic route, replacing highly toxic gaseous reactant with benign solid reactant with similar production cost and efficiency ***Improved a synthesis protocol, reducing cost by ~27% ***Optimized the composition of a polymer product, reducing cost by ~29% ***Filed 1 patent on a very challenging work of ultra-low dielectric loss resin
Working on silicone polymers/elastomers in Prof. Mike Brook's group: ***Design, synthesis and testing of functional silicone polymers. ***Synthetic reactions include: Piers-Rubinsztajn (PR) reaction, Pt-catalysed or thermally-induced hydrosilylation, Pd-catalysed hydroxylation, etc. ***Purification techniques include: Kugelrohr distillation and column chromatography. ***Physical properties testing include: Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), refractive index (RI), Shore hardness measurements, transmittance, etc. ***Novel synthetic methods of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) initiated by fluoride which is much greener and easier to handle than traditional methods. ***Novel green and facile curing method by air for silicone elastomers. ***Mentored 2 co-opt students on silicone dendrimers and elastomers.
My PhD research was conducted under Dr Eli Zysman-Colman's supervision: ***Design and synthesis of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters, both small-molecule and polymeric, for light-emitting electrochemical cells (LEECs) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). ***Purification techniques of TADF emitters include: column chromatography, recrystallization and sublimation. ***Physical properties testing of TADF emitters include: UV-vis absorption, cyclic voltammetry, emission spectra, emission lifetime and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). ***Developed strong teamwork and communication skills as a result of close collaboration with Physics professionals in Prof. Ifor Samuel's group and Prof. Henk Bolink's group. ***Also accomplished two organometallic chemistry projects. ***Mentored 5 student researchers on synthesis and characterization of novel TADF emitters.
