Michael was previously Managing Director of Medianet which encompassed the press release and media contacts database business, the Directories business and media analysis division Mediaverse. The business was previously a part of Australian Associated Press (AAP) Australia's national news agency. Medianet's shareholders, News Corp and Nine, sold the news agency in 2020. After four years of service in the Royal Australian Navy, Michael worked in a number of communications roles in the UK before returning to Melbourne to join Australia’s leading communications consultancy, Turnbull Fox Phillips. In 1994 he was awarded a scholarship to the American University in Washington DC to undertake a Master’s degree in communications and was also appointed a Senior Graduate Research Fellow in the School of Communication. During his time in the US, Michael worked in the political office of the Australian Embassy as well as a part time position as an on-line editor for one of the country’s largest telecommunications providers. Returning to Melbourne in 1996, Michael was appointed Director of Media Analysis at Rehame. In this position he established the Rehame media analysis division and held a weekly radio segment discussing news and current affairs on Melbourne’s leading talkback station 3AW. A year later he established The Media Research Group which employed more than 35 full and part-time staff with offices and affiliates in all states of Australia. The business was acquired by Australian Associated Press in 2007 and Michael stayed on as Managing Director and assumed responsibility for the Medianet business in 2013 and the AAP Directories business in 2014. Michael has taught communications and research subjects at RMIT and the University of Technology in Sydney at both undergraduate and graduate level.
