    The Max Planck Junior Scholars Program offers summer internships to high-school students to gain research experience at the Max-Planck-Institute for Brain Research (Frankfurt am Main). During this time the scholar works together with a mentor on a scientific project. For the 3 week program I was assigned to Prof. Dr. Erin M. Schuman's lab. As the Director of Synaptic Plasticity, her work focuses on the molecular and cell biological processes that control protein synthesis and degradation in neurons and their synapses. Under the instruction of my mentor, Dr. S. tom-Dieck, I was taught the methods of in vitro neuron cultivation, calcium staining and in situ hybridisation.
