I make algorithms for spectral analysis of time-series signals - like picking out the notes from a piece of music, or the colors from a beam of light. My work involves researching the existing algorithms in the field, building mathematical models of my data, implementing algorithms and testing them against the data, and optimizing the algorithms until they're fast enough to run in real time. I'm focused on using my algorithms to monitor the EEG brain waves of people under anesthesia. To that end, I also study how to adapt my algorithm to EEG signals, and I write interfaces between my code and medical systems.
