My educational and professional foci center on two main topics: 1) The intersection of how environmental justice, racial/ethnic/cultural discrimination and historical harm, socioeconomic status, and healthcare and information accessibility influence the development, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care of diseases, especially in children with cancer 2) How emotional trauma (from abuse to historical treatment), income, zip code, and exposures influence chronic disease development, and how to comprehensively and effectively approach conditions like chronic fatigue and chronic pain syndromes. My vocational, community activism, and political involvement extend to increasing funding, access, and research into such diseases and disparities, combatting human trafficking, supporting First Generation/Low Income students, increasing awareness and support for disabled individuals, and changing the pervasive belief that profit should be prioritized over people, like in the cases of oil drilling site regulation in South Central LA. Currently, I am dedicated to attaining a rich and productive education, experiencing the world through unique and open perspectives, studying and researching human biology (specifically oncology), immersing myself in the arts and humanities, and forming lasting and meaningful bonds with those around me.
Serving as the bridge between Lahai patients and additional support they may need outside of the healthcare services we provide on-site. Referring families to legal assistance, immigration lawyers, and housing support; locating nearby addiction programs, food banks, and household supply drives; connecting patients to mental/behavioral healthcare, youth and senior care, employment options, and DV shelters; assisting in filling out applications/forms and calling organizations. Fostered relationships with our patients, who are either underinsured or uninsured, most of whom are immigrants, built on trust, empathy, support, and validation of their struggles.
Assisting in creating EHR training for nurse, provider, receptionist, and patient advocate roles, research for and then writing grants, organized and analyzed demographic data to elucidate barriers to care that Lahai could further focus on, and participated in preparedness meetings for if healthcare and immigration policies changed in the near future. Lahai offers mental, medical, and dental healthcare to patients in the greater King and Snohomish counties who are underinsured or uninsured. The vast majority of patients are immigrants and refugees, and this is their only access to healthcare.
