Because although people and teams transformed short-term (and created awesome products...so not all waste) most organizations failed to sustain the change. About 7-years ago I discovered the answer, in the form of a diminutive organizational change guru from Australia. USAA Feb 2012 - July 2015 We led a global enterprise Agile transformation program at a large and successful bank and insurance company. Reporting directly to the senior executive in charge of the transformation, we led a team of seventeen Agile coaches in a global Agile organizational change initiative impacting the entire software development life cycle (SDLC). The CIO declared the initiative a resounding success as it delivered on all of his core metrics: quality, productivity, and time-to-market. Peer mentoring was the primary tool utilized to develop a unified and coordinated effort across the entire Agile transformation team. Peer mentoring allowed us to accomplish more with seventeen coaches than others teams accomplish with hundreds of coaches. The Agile engagement crossed seven different business units and two continents. The IT teams successfully executed hundreds of millions of dollars in Agile software development projects over the duration of the engagement. Practices central to the transformation include Scrum, XP, Kanban, Lean, and Scaled Agile.
