About

Musicologist and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics. I'm fascinated by what music does to people and what people do with music. My research connects the history, psychology and sociology of music - from early music to current crises like COVID and war. I use both historical and empirical methods. Current focus areas: Global history of music aesthetics, musical taste, expression perception in music, music experience in concerts, music in religious contexts, social functions of music.
