Airport planners think in 2D. Architects naturally think in 3D. The gap between the two disciplines is where I've spent the last 20 years, being both an airport planner and a registered architect. My career has taken me across three regions, Australia, Malaysia and now Saudi Arabia - I've worked with PMC, Consultant and Client side - from national airport masterplans, terminal design to delivering fast travel systems in a live terminal. I'm currently part of the Mott MacDonald team in Riyadh, working on strategic airport programmes across the Middle East. Before that, I ran my architecture firm specialising in airport design in Malaysia for nearly a decade - leading projects for government, airport operators and private investors from 1mppa airports to 45mppa. There's a saying in this industry, "once you're bitten by the aviation bug, you never leave." Twenty years in, I think that's about right.
Founder of a specialist architectural practice specializing in airport design, providing leadership across strategy and delivery. Selected experience includes: Directed masterplanning and architectural concept design for a proposed 45mppa low-cost carrier terminal (KLIA3), leading presentations to Prime Ministerial and Federal stakeholders to secure project approval and funding. Delivered end-to-end implementation of 144 biometric fast-travel processing units across KLIA and KLIA2, managing layout design, stakeholder approvals, construction and system integration within live operational terminals. Led masterplanning for Kulim Airport's 4,200-acre integrated cargo and logistics hub, coordinating Ministerial engagement and private sector investment discussions to support project approval.
Led full design and construction delivery of Alice Smith International School developments, managing multidisciplinary teams from schematic design through to project completion. Projects received national recognition - PAM Gold Award and Building of the Year 2015.
Contributed to terminal planning studies across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Auckland airports, covering passenger flow modelling, capacity planning, spatial configuration and layout .
Core author for Malaysia's National Airport Masterplan covering 21 airports across 10, 15 and 50 year planning horizons, delivering land-use strategies, terminal configuration and phasing frameworks. Progressed KLIA2's 30mppa terminal from masterplan concept through to tender and early construction stage, coordinating multidisciplinary teams across a major live airport development.
