  • CNI-ISSNAF Internship at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
    Dec 2016 - Mar 2017 · 4 mos

In 2016, I was honored to be one of eleven Italian engineers chosen for a scholarship by CNI-ISSNAF, leading to an internship at NASA GSFC under the supervision of Dr. Eleonora Troja, where I focused on enhancing a pipeline for detection and classification of astronomical events (transients) over images from RATIR - an imaging module that was installed on the Johnson telescope at the Observatory Astronómico Nacional in Mexico. https://ratir.astroscu.unam.mx/ My contributions included: * Fixing bugs in the pipeline using Python, Numpy, and Astropy, making it more reliable. * Breaking down and repackaging the code to make it easier to use and download through PyPi. * Creating scripts for easy setup on new computers and preparing a virtual machine image with Vagrant for better distribution. * Writing detailed documentation to help scientists use and improve the pipeline. This remarkable experience provided me with a unique glimpse into time-domain astronomy, the study of gamma-ray bursts and their connection to gravitational waves. https://github.com/maxperry/photometrypipeline https://ratir.astroscu.unam.mx/
