PD Dr. Wintergerst is medical site director and consultant Ophthalmologist at Augenzentrum Grischun, Graubünden, Switzerland, and Research Group Leader and University Lecturer in Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Bonn, Germany. Beside the whole spectrum of conservative ophthalmology, his special focus is medical retina, uveitis, cataract surgery, and vitreoretinal surgery. His research focus is ophthalmic imaging and image analysis in uveitis and the application of low-cost imaging approaches to improve health care in low- and middle-income countries. Dr. Wintergerst has published over 80 papers in peer-reviewed Journals (including Ophthalmology, AJO, IOVS, Scientific Reports, JEM; thereof 32 first-/last-authorships). Among different international projects that he is heading, he is director of the Hospital Partnership Program of the University Hospital Bonn and the Sankara Eye Hospital Bangalore, India. Dr. Wintergerst studied medicine at Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) of Munich, the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the University of Cincinnati, and the Weill Cornell Medical College New York. He completed his medical studies with highest honors among the top 1% students in Germany. Dr. Wintergerst conducted his doctoral dissertation in basic immunological science where he established a novel imaging method for cell culture at LMU Munich and defended his thesis with highest honors (summa cum laude). Continuing his interest in novel imaging methods and image analysis, Dr. Wintergerst completed his habilitation thesis on the evaluation of Smartphone-based retinal imaging for ophthalmologic examination at the University of Bonn. For his commitment to international eye care and uveitis he has received numerous awards and grants including the eXcellence in Ophthalmology Vision Award (XOVA) by Novartis, Health Partnership Global and Academic grants by the German Federal Ministry for economic cooperation and development (BMZ) and the Else Kröner-Fresenius-Foundation (EKFS), the Bytes4diabetes award, tropical Ophthalmology research grants by the German Ophthalmic Society (DOG), the Smart Medical Information Technology for Healthcare (SMITH) consortium research grant, the Ernst and Berta Grimmke Foundation research grant, the Science Award 2022 of the Association of Rhenish-Westphalian Ophthalmologists (RWA), the University of Bonn BONFOR Gerok Scholarship, and travel grants by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the European Society of Retina Specialists (EURETINA), and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
