Over the past 20 years he held various roles in both the public and private sectors including the Dutch Parliament, Dow Chemical, Burson-Marsteller, MSD/Merck and Sanofi. Matthijs earned his Master of Science degree in Public Administration from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He currently resides in New York City.
Responsible for developing and leading the company’s global patient advocacy and public policy strategy for oncology, with a strong emphasis on building trusted relationships with patient communities in the U.S. and Europe and shaping policy environments - particularly in Europe - to improve access to innovative treatments and diagnostics.
Responsible for the development and execution of the Access Policy and Patient Access strategies and activities to support optimal access to Menarini's oncology product portfolio, focused on breast cancer and multiple myeloma.
Matthijs was the Head of Global Public Affairs for Breast Cancer at Sanofi. In this role, he was the primary conduit to the global metastatic breast cancer community with a focus on supporting patient advocates and caregivers. Matthijs was responsible for developing and implementing Sanofi’s breast cancer policy program to drive innovation, collaboration and progress in treatment and care across the globe. Furthermore, his focus was on cancer policy, working with the global cancer community on making sure our aging healthcare systems keep pace with innovation. Sanofi discontinued the amcenestrant clinical development program in August 2022.
As a Director Oncology Policy for Europe, Middle East, Africa and Canada, my objective was to create a Policy environment supporting the delivery of MSD’s cancer medicines (Keytruda) to improve and extend the lives of people with cancer. Responsibilities included supporting oncology policy teams in 19 European countries, leading lung cancer policy for the region including the development and implementation of a major stakeholder advocacy program across 27 markets, driving country planning on combinations policy, representing MSD in industry and multi-stakeholder alliances (e.g. EFPIA, All.Can, European Cancer Organisation), leading the organization for MSD’s annual flagship cancer policy conference in Brussels.
In 2017 I worked on a stretch assignment for EMEAC Oncology Policy on the Regional level.
