With over a decade of experience coordinating energy management programs including tenure within the public, private, and non-profit sectors, as well as years of building investigation experience, Matthew brings a multi-faceted approach and passion for energy management. With more than ten years of experience in residential and commercial construction Matthew is a certified designer with project management experience coordinating the energy department of a multinational engineering consulting firm, as well as developing presentations, courses, and articles for a number of audiences. Graduated with honours from the Sustainable Energy and Building Technology program at Humber College. Successfully challenged Ontario Building Official Association (OBOA) examinations to obtain a BCIN. Obtained the designation of Certified Energy Manager (CEM) through the Association of Energy Engineers. Most recently completed the Certified Sustainable Building Operator (CSBO) certification through the Canadian Institute for Energy Training (CIET)
In this role I am responsible for day to day energy management across the GBC portfolio of buildings. I was personally tasked with bringing the college back into compliance with local energy and water reporting regulations and have developed the Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan, as well as the Integrated Energy and Water Master Plan, and TransitionTO Net Zero 2040 decarbonization framework for the College. Routinely coordinates with multiple stakeholders within the City of Toronto including: The Green Will Initiative, Enbridge Gas, Toronto Hydro, the IESO, The Toronto Water Utility, The Better Buildings Partnership, The Federation of Canadian Municipalities, Noventa, and Enwave.
In this role I helped develop a multidisciplinary team and mentored new hires to perform various tasks including: ASHRAE Level 2 & 3 energy audits, decarbonization plans, BAS reviews, energy models, solar site assessments, building condition assessments, reserve fund studies, energy and water reporting, and formal presentations. I performed building code reviews and managed various projects for a number of clients and municipalities which include: The City of Brampton, The City of Toronto, The Region of Durham, Infrastructure Ontario, CBRE, Toronto Community Housing, Norfolk County, the Co-op Housing Federation, and East Gwillimbury to name a few.
In this role I conducted energy audits, building condition assessments, various building investigations including: ultrasonic testing, matterport 3D building scanning, building code reviews, fire/life safety reviews, solar array design, lighting design, and general contract administration.
In this position I was responsible for preparing buildings for blower door testing, setting up equipment and running the testing from a central computer. Also preparing detailed building measurements and recording other building characteristics such as mechanical equipment and past renovations. We used these measurements to calculate an ACH50 and an EQLA and combined this with thermal imaging to create comprehensive building diagnostic reports. I worked with BlueGreen between 2013-2014 and in 2017.
eMERGE Homes Program Coordinator performing home efficiency audits and calculating energy conservation impacts of retrofits and efficiency upgrades. Coordinated and supervised volunteers and provided proper training and support for the Home Visit "Support Crew". Consults with the lead computer programmer to refine and improve eMERGE's energy auditing/lighting assessment software and performs field testing of said software to work out bugs and improve output quality.
