I have over 10 years of experience developing software and the full development life cycle, this is in addition to five years of experience in creating and leading distributed technical teams. Reporting to the CTO, I manage all software development and delivery, working closely with the product team and other internal stakeholders. I also manage client and vendor relationships/expectations as well as working closely with regulators in various markets to ensure stringent regulations are met.
Hostelworld is the number one hostel booking website in the world. There are over 33,000 properties to choose from in 19 different languages and over 8 million verified guest reviews. In this role I work as part of a cross functional team developing robust and scalable code to support high traffic, customer facing applications such as hostelworld.com and hostels.com. To date I have worked on many exciting projects including the relaunch of Hostelworld.com website as well as one of the client facing applications for property availability and booking management. I have recently been appointed as an Agile coach within the company to train teams on best practices as part of the companywide transition to Agile.
Created a high availability system to handle big spikes in traffic for on-sale days for popular events like Il Divo, PDC World Darts, world title WBO boxing fights and Champions League qualifiers. - Hired full-time and contract developers to work on the platform as well as full-time and contract designers with work on the UI and UX. - Providing line management for developers. - Managed remote teams of developers working across multiple geographical locations. - Allocating work across team members to maximize throughput. - Managing developmental releases on time and budget. - Performance reviews, goal and objective setting. - Demonstrating a can-do attitude, focusing on solutions instead of problems. Managed the development of the following applications: - Standalone box office application for our clients’ staff to fully manage their ticketing requirements. - Fully brandable white-label system to allow clients sell directly through their own site via our hosted solution or via an embedded iframe. - Fully localised scanning application. - One-touch sales application for high volume quick sales. - REST APIs to power our applications such as our website, box office, mobile and white-label, sales and scanning syncronisation. On all developmental and project work I worked closely with the product side of the business as well as directly with clients to fully understand needs and to make sure exact requirements were delivered.
Complete Web Solutions Ltd is web design and development agency building and maintaining a diverse range of database driven ecommerce applications for clients such as Scouting Ireland, The Outdoor Adventure Store and 7up Christmas on Ice. I was involved in pitching to large clients in face-to-face meetings to gather requirements, then working these requirements in to actual specifications to be delivered back as part of the final proposal they received. I was the project manager and direct contact on many of the large accounts. I changed my programming language from Classic ASP to PHP when I started here. I spent 4 great years in this role creating and managing the development of web applications ranging from single page websites to more complex systems that were both MySQL database driven and connected to live payment systems (Realex and Paypal). - Developed online stores with real-time payment authorisation via Realex’s Remote API as well as integration with Paypal website checkout. - Developed recurring billing for membership based websites that integrated with Realex’s Remote API. Features included: remote user profile creation, Monthly automated billing, Auto retry days later for failed billing, Card removal and account deletion on request - Developed websites and applications using PHP with a MySQL backend and W3C compliant XHTML, CSS and JavaScript at the client side. - Developed a content management system called “Complete Content Management System” (CCMS) from scratch using the MVC model including many modular features activated by a DB flag. Some of these include: News section, Photo gallery, Blogs, Online store with shopping cart, Payment facility. - Developed a quote management system for a large national product supplier. It has a custom built reporting system so the management team can review quotes won / lost in real time and also monitor which reps are performing the best. - Optimised large-scale queries for optimum response times.
