    I demonstrated that addition of fingolimod (Gilenya) to cultured neurons increases their spontaneous activity, and results in a different firing pattern. Next I was able to detect the elusive pro-domain of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which was crucial to understand that it is probably coreleased with mature BDNF. Finally I have been trying to understand the localization of overexpressed neurotrophin receptors in ES cell derived neurons.

    My main project was to express a genetically encoded calcium sensor in specific sensory neurons in a worm. This allowed us to study activation of these cells upon stimulation with different salt concentration. Second, I set up a method to detect transport vesicles in the extreme tip of the neurons. This tool has been used to show that certain mutants that we picked up in the lab affect which motor protein is loaded on the vesicles.
