Working as a tech lead, I put people first and give my best to address and correct systemic issues in both professional and societal domains. Deep inside, I'm a software engineer with a focus on artificial intelligence + computational photography and a background in embedded systems and robotics. Being in the field of computer vision and image processing, I'm advancing technology for visual search, image understanding and soft real time information retrieval. Apart from my leadership role, I have both broad and deep experience with several areas of artificial intelligence including machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, planning and exploration, as well as the fields of adaptive signal processing and sensor fusion and am heavily interested in remote sensing, autonomous flying and driving applications. My view is that working on vastly different topics ranging from low-level hardware and software design to algorithm design and implementation, large-scale data processing pipelines and DevOps allows to leverage key performance insights of each area to entirely new topics. Ultimately, I have a knack for both memory footprint and processing speed optimization and will happily solve even the worst problems.
Hired to build a Software Engineering team from the ground up, I’ve scaled the team to nine professionals, encompassing Mobile, Web, Backend, DevOps, and QA roles, with a focus on senior-level expertise. We are set to grow further, adding more members next year to expand our capabilities. Key Responsibilities & Achievements: ● Team Building & Scaling – Established a strong technical team from scratch, scaling to nine members with plans for further growth, including expertise in mobile, web, backend, DevOps, and QA. ● Infrastructure Modernization – Introduced Kubernetes to our on-prem infrastructure, with a strategic plan to transition to a cloud-hosted environment next year. ● In-House Development Transition – Leading efforts to bring an existing outsourced digital aftercare solution in-house while pioneering new aftercare solutions across mobile and web platforms. ● Certification Leadership – Guiding ongoing ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 certification processes; audits completed and certifications in progress. ● Agile Practices & Secure SDLC – Implementing agile methodologies and a secure Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), collaborating closely with Product, CISO, IT, HR, and later, rollout teams. ● Cross-functional Collaboration – Working with outsourced development agencies and building productive, secure collaboration channels across departments to ensure alignment with company goals.
As Head of Engineering at nyris GmbH, I lead the charge in orchestrating innovation and excellence. My role is defined by strategic leadership, agile methodologies, a people-first approach and fostering a company-wide culture of collaboration. I'm at the forefront of driving transformation and building bridges between people, teams and departments to achieve our goals better, together. Notable Achievements and topics: ● The introduction of a company-wide Kanban process for project and product planning, setting a foundation for the ISO 27001 certification, ● Managing the change and communication about planning and alignment cross-teams and departments, ● Achieving working goal setting in tandem with the product, infrastructure, machine learning and customer success departments, ● The introduction of team management hierarchies within the Software Engineering department, ● The extension of Quality Assurance measures, from hiring dedicated QA engineers to reinforcing the review end of the software development life cycle, ● The introduction of the Infrastructure and Machine Learning departments and advocating as well as participating in the hiring process for their heads, ● Mentoring and Coaching of Junior through Senior engineers, as well as other managers, throughout the company, and ● Working closely with People & Culture and HR to contribute to and also insure improvements on diversity and inclusion related topics.
I am implementing strategy, planning and review loops, interfacing with the Sales and Customer Success process, onboarding new nyris Deep Learning, Data Science and Software Engineering family members and supporting the team in algorithm design and engineering decisions. Recent projects I worked on: ● Initiating implementation of agile AI methods on top of Kubernetes, ● Preparing a heterogeneous programming landscape including C#, C++, Python and Go, ● Automated catalog product recognition and localization, ● Ensemble methods for score joining from different belief sources, ● Actor system based overhaul of core orchestration components.
At my previous position at nyris, I did artificial intelligence solutions engineering and software development in image matching and retrieval for a realtime photo based search engine. I kept saving the day while providing a guaranteed 95.45% availability of cheerfulness. Key parts of my work were: ● Implementation of the semantic visual search now known as nyris MESS, ● Implementation of OpenID authentication services for the service backends, ● Introduction of MongoDB and guiding the migration of MySQL/MariaDB based services, ● Operating services on IBM SoftLayer, Google Cloud Services, Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure, ● Introducing Semantic Versioning and Git-Flow + Merge Request processes, ● Participating and driving the introduction of Docker and Kubernetes.
