Mark Stewart, MD, PhD is Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, and Professor of Physiology & Pharmacology, and Neurology. Dr. Stewart received his MD and PhD degrees in 1991 (thesis defense in 1989) from Downstate. His PhD and a postdoctoral fellowship were in neuroscience, and his current research is focused on understanding the systemic consequences of epileptic seizure activity. He and his colleagues have developed the most comprehensive description to date of the mechanism for sudden death in epilepsy (SUDEP) and approaches for prevention. Administratively, Dr. Stewart has had roles in a variety of research and training programs including (1) the Brooklyn Health Disparities Center, (2) an NIH-funded GI Cancer Disparities program, (3) an NIH-funded Health Disparities Training program, and (4) training pipeline programs with Medgar Evers College (NIH RISE program) and Brooklyn College (NIH BP-ENDURE program).
