My primary role is energy policy advice as an official to government ministers. Currently I coordinate energy policy on hydrogen as a potential fuel for New Zealand use and export and represent New Zealand internationally in the International Energy Agency and the Clean Energy Ministerial. I have taken part in several governmental reviews of the New Zealand electricity market; as part of the secretariat for the 2018 electricity price review and in the 2010 review where I was one of the MED/Treasury team of officials that managed the sale of Tekapo A&B from Meridian to Genesis Energy. Internationally I have been part of an OECD team conducting the Energy and Environmental Review of Iceland in 2013, and was the electricity expert for the IEA In-Depth Review of Australia's Energy Policy in 2017 and Japan in early 2020. I managed the sale of the Whirinaki power station by tender to Contact Energy, and the sale of the residual diesel fuel owned by the Crown by tender to Gull and Z-Energy. I manage the annual tender for the purchase oil tickets to maintain compliance with New Zealand's IEA obligations, and I am the NZ delegate to the IEA Governing Board in Paris. Other areas of involvement in energy include: - Management and setup of electricity retail operations. - Modelling of electricity systems and forecasting. - Assessing the potential effects of new energy technologies on energy policy.
