Profile Marius Lucien Coetzee is an arts innovator, cultural strategist, and music specialist with a global career spanning performance, academia, and arts management. Education Educated at the Pretoria High School for the Arts and the University of Pretoria (Political Science and Music, specialising in Art Song). Leadership at the Odeion School of Music (OSM) Since 2011, Coetzee has served as Innovation and Development Expert at the Odeion School of Music (University of the Free State). There, he founded the acclaimed OSM Camerata, established the International Liesbeth Schlumberger Organ Chair, and received the UFS Innovation Award for Teaching and Learning (2018). Current Institutional Development He is currently developing the Free State Symphony Orchestra International Conducting Chair in collaboration with OSM, aligned with the Sibelius Academy model. International Academic Leadership (Finland & Europe) Internationally, Coetzee worked in Finland (2003–2009) at Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences, where he helped establish and lead the pioneering Degree in International Music Management, securing EU ERASMUS funding and expanding a multi-country consortium. He also contributed to the European Master of Music: New Audiences and Innovative Practice. Diplomatic and Cultural Leadership From 1999 to 2002, he served as Permanent Cultural Adviser at the Embassy of Finland in South Africa, establishing its Cultural Section. Early Career Development His early career includes roles as Marketing Manager of the State Theatre Dance Company (PACT), international study visits to Europe, a SAMRO-funded Arts Management programme in Helsinki, and an internship with the Batsheva Dance Company in Israel. Scholarly and Choral Contributions A published conference speaker and freelance journalist for Media24, Coetzee is a passionate advocate for South African choral music, commissioning new works and promoting them internationally. Recent Projects In 2023, he curated and fundraised the first South African Art Music film concert at the Festival of Afrikaans in The Hague, leading to multiple performances, including in Amsterdam.
From 1998 to 2002, Coetzee served as Permanent Cultural Adviser at the Embassy of Finland in South Africa (Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs), where he established and managed the Embassy’s Cultural Section.
Coetzee began his professional career in 1994 as Marketing Manager of the State Theatre Dance Company (PACT) in South Africa, where he was instrumental in securing internationally acclaimed choreographers.
The 37th International Viola Congress was held in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in July 2009, marking a historic first for the event on the African continent. Hosted by Hester Wohlitz, the congress featured numerous performances, including the premiere of "The Gathering" by Lizzie Rennie and Peter Klatzow's Sonata for Viola Solo. Significance: It was the first International Viola Congress hosted in Africa.
