About

I work in the space between art and design. After thirty years, I have stopped explaining it. My practice is built on a single obsession: the visual language embedded in folk embroidery — Greek, Persian, Indian, Chinese, Latin American, Russian, Balkan — by anonymous women working stitch by stitch in a state I can only describe as ecstatic concentration. A meditation practice disguised as domestic craft. A symbolic system of extraordinary mathematical complexity made by hands that no history recorded. I developed a methodology/artistic practice called Digital Pointillism to reconstruct these patterns pixel by pixel. The process does something unexpected: it puts you in the same state the makers were in. Repetitive. Absorbed. Altered. When I am working, I am somewhere else. When I finished the pieces for my solo exhibition at the Victoria G. Karelias Collection — the 3-metre breathing installation, the printed canvases placed alongside the original costumes in their cases — I wanted the person standing in that room to feel what I felt making them. Ecstatic. Physically awake. Slightly outside themselves. That is what I am trying to make every time. I am an artist with a solo exhibition. I am a heritage creative director whose studio — POSTFOLK — operates in two modes: building heritage identities for institutions from archival research, and licensing Digital Pointillism designs to international brands. I have worked with the Public Power Corporation of Greece, the Greek National Opera, the Benaki Museum, the Grand Hyatt Athens, Nike, and Ancient Greek Sandals. My GNO work received a commendation from the President of the Hellenic Republic and the Prime Minister of Greece. In 2006 I designed the complete visual identity of the Museum of History of Nea Orestiada — immersing myself in 1,000+ archive photographs to build the visual language of a community's displaced memory. That project inspired the methodology/artistic practice I still use today. I am looking for residencies, institutional commissions, and long-term collaborations with people who understand that folk visual traditions are not historical footnotes. They are living, structurally complex systems of knowledge — and some of them, if you sit with them long enough, will change your state of mind. mariaolgavlachou.art · mariaolgavlachou.com · postfolk.com Based in Athens, Greece
