I am a Research Scientist at Apple working on machine learning for health in the division of sensing, data, and interaction software. Prior to joining Apple in 2016, I was a Research Professor at the University of California San Diego, Institute for Neural Computation. There I co-directed the Machine Perception Lab and ran the Computational Face Group. In 2012, I co-Founded Emotient, a start-up for automatic facial expression recognition, where I served as Lead Scientist. My research at UCSD focused on machine learning and computer vision, with application to face recognition and expression analysis. I collaborated with Terry Sejnowski, Paul Ekman and Javier Movellan to automate the Facial Action Coding System and develop applications of this technology in healthcare and education. My most cited paper is Face recognition by independent component analysis (Bartlett, Movellan & Sejnowski, IEEE T. Neural Networks 2002). Overall, I authored more than 80 articles in scientific journals and peer reviewed conference proceedings, have 5 patents, and a book, Face Image Analysis by Unsupervised Learning, which describes my work applying principles of information theory to face images. From 2002-2012, I received over 10M in grant funding from sources including National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Homeland Security, Naval Research Labs, Office of Naval Research, and partnerships with the SONY corporation. I served on the Board of the Neural Information Processing Systems conference since 2007, and was Director of Scientific Programs at the UCSD Temporal Dynamics of Learning Center at UCSD from 2009-2015. I received my undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Middlebury College and my Ph.D. in Cognitive Science and Psychology from UCSD.
