About

Marcus was born in 1984 on the back seat of a Trabant in Hoyerswerda and grew up partly in a Dresden housing block and partly on his grandparents’ farm. He learned to chop wood, ride sheep, shoot an air rifle, and assisted in the birth of calves. These days, he usually looks after Schrödinger’s cat on weekends and believes in miracles. Flashback – after a few foggy years full of LAN parties and an extra lap at school, he eventually earned his high school diploma in Dresden, trained as a digital and print media designer, joined the TP2 Talent Pool program, studied directing at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin – and went on to direct music videos, commercials, and short films. In addition, Marcus worked as a unit manager and 1st AD on more than 50 commercials, music videos, and short films as well as 5 feature films. On projects across the globe, he experienced things better left ungoogled. He raced old Mercedes cars through the former Eastern Bloc, shot with well-known musicians and influencers in Barcelona, Iceland, and Bangkok, floated down the Mississippi on a raft, and retrieved his confiscated driver’s license from the glove compartment of a Russian police car. His body of work is a bold and playful odyssey, a love letter to genre cinema and the magic of improvisation. Marcus’ films pretend to be about AI, the future, and consciousness – but in the end they are always about intimacy, loss, and that one pause in dialogue where everything might tip. His funded and award-winning short films Breath Dodging, Flying, Love Note, and Q: Ghostly Remote Effect have been shown at over 300 festivals and have won more than 90 awards. From 2015 to 2021, Marcus explored what it means to feel and cry in front of a camera through actor-director workshops. Since 2016, he has been shaping the European Film Market as a production manager – building a platform for the films and series of our future, or at least our evenings. As a jury member at the SciFi Film Festival Berlin (2020, 2021) and the Macau International Film Festival (2022), he searched thousands of short films for the moment when the screen suddenly looks back. In 2021, he joined the renowned Mannheim Cutting Edge Talent Camp. Since the birth of his two ridiculously sweet children, the end of the world has unfortunately ceased to be something he can ignore. In 2024, he shot his first feature film as producer and director: NICHT IN UNSERER FAMILIE – about violence within the family, the silence that protects it, and the courage to break the chain of its transmission.
